It was a gloomy, rainy Saturday in Miami, so I decided to make it a little better by picking up some goodies at La Provence in Coral Gables. It seemed that others had the same idea because when I went it was bustling with patrons ordering lattes, pastries, sandwiches and much more. I decided to get a box of macarons, a canele, and a chocolate croissant to enjoy later or the next morning with some coffee.
First, I had the canele with French press coffee. The canele had a caramelized crust on the outside and a moist custard-y center; perfect with my coffee.
Next, were the macarons. I ordered 2 of every flavor macaronthey had that day which included, chocolat, creme citron, dulce de leche, and raspberry. They were scrumptious, just what you would expect from a macaron; flaky meringue cookies with a jam/ganache filled center. I only wish they had more flavors!!
Interesting tid-bit:Through my research on the origin of the macaron, many sources suggest that it actually originated in Italy and was brought to France by Catherine Medici who married the man who would become King Henry II circa 1533. It was much later on, in the early 1900s when Pierre Desfontaines, of the Laduree pastry shop, reinvented the macaron as we know them today. He took two macarons and sandwiched ganache between them. Genius! 😉
I left my chocolate croissant for the next morning as a breakfast treat with coffee 🙂
